Domestic vs commercial cleaning: what is the difference?

Both services involve cleaning, but the operating requirements can be very different. A home booking is usually built around household priorities and personal access. Commercial cleaning may involve multiple users, workplace risks, formal specifications, site rules and documented responsibilities.

Guidance only: Clean & Sorted currently provides public online booking for domestic homes. This commercial article is informational and is not an offer of commercial cleaning services.

Key points

  • Commercial cleaning often requires a site-specific scope and risk assessment.
  • COSHH may apply to products and substances used at work.
  • Wet-floor control, public access and equipment storage need formal planning.
  • Commercial waste has different duty-of-care requirements from ordinary household waste.

Domestic cleaning is centred on the household

Domestic cleaning usually covers kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living spaces and household extras. The customer can explain priorities, access, pets, parking and fragile areas through a relatively simple booking record.

The work still needs to be carried out safely, but the service scope is normally narrower and the number of people affected by the cleaning activity is lower.

Commercial cleaning is centred on a site and specification

An office, shop or shared building may need cleaning outside operating hours, secure access, alarm procedures, washroom schedules, consumables management and sign-off records. The buyer may also require evidence of insurance, training and risk controls before work begins.

The cleaning specification should state which areas are included, how often each task is completed, what standard is expected and who deals with exceptions.

Chemical and workplace controls are more formal

HSE explains that COSHH requires workplace exposure to harmful substances to be adequately controlled. Cleaning products can cause dermatitis, allergies, asthma, burns or eye damage when poorly selected or used incorrectly.

Commercial arrangements should therefore identify products, read labels and safety data sheets, plan storage and ventilation, provide suitable controls and make sure cleaners understand the procedures.

Waste responsibilities differ

Waste from premises used mainly for business is commercial waste. GOV.UK's waste duty-of-care code explains that businesses controlling waste must take reasonable steps to prevent harmful disposal or escape, use authorised recipients and provide an accurate description when waste is transferred.

A cleaning specification should be clear about whether the cleaner only places waste into the customer's on-site system or is expected to remove and transport it.

Is Clean & Sorted currently a commercial cleaning service?

Clean & Sorted's current public booking flow is designed for domestic homes. This article is general guidance for Norfolk businesses and cleaners. Commercial booking should only be offered once the service has the appropriate specifications, pricing, compliance checks and operational workflow in place.
